Flying in Italy - Alassio

Gunter Muller

Alassio: 2 - Puerto del Sol, 3 - Capo Me

A small town Alassio is located on the coast of a bay about 80 kilometers far from Monaco and that's why the local sunny microclimate reigns here. The system of the air circulation "sea-land" hold over the local flying.

Location on the map of Italy

You can find three taking off points round the bay. The highest (584m) is Pisciavino (1) which is suitable for calm flights down or an evening flying in good thermals. It's often possible to soar above the slope near Capo S.Croce.

The taking off point number 2 is known as Puerto del Sol (150m) and it is excellent area for soaring. You can even find strong thermals early morning. I was flying more than 2 hours here at a height of 600 meters at the end of October.

The name of the taking off point number 3 is Capo Mele and it stands for the third possibility to take off and soar here. Lee-thermals often form in this area in the afternoon. Then you can fly along the whole bay towards Capo S.Croce (about 8 km).

 Above the beach

The landing zone is located just on the coast. No other possibilities exist. Unfortunately, pilots are allowed to land on the coast only out of the season. It approximately means from October 15th to April 15th!

 Above the seacoast

I flew here five times altogether. Naturally, you can't have as big flights as in Dolomits but it's fairly attractive. You can bathe or go for trips and meal and wine is really nice.
