"And I tell him face to face - show me the way!" somebody babbles about his meeting a stork in the air this afternoon and a demijohn of Saint Vincence wine, which was brought from Moravia, is empty again. Nothing changed in Pension Kukacka since the last year's competition. Except the snow around a house which melted only two weeks ago and it even lies on the ridge till now. Strange weather.
Saturday 21.05.2005
The first day of the competition begins traditionally with a clear sky and
gorgeous weather as every year. According to the light south wind organizers
choose a take off point Medvedin for today at a briefing in front of a Yellow Point office in Spindleruv Mlyn and 42 registered pilots go by a
cableway up to the hill.
A light southwest wind blows at the taking off area and 37.3km long
discipline is declared shortly before one o'clock. It spans three turning
points - Lysa hora, Medvedin and Cerna hora. A goal line will be prepared on
a landing zone under Plane. A start window is open shortly after the end of
briefing at one past noon.
"We can't wait any longer, the clouds are coming," Roman Skokan values high
clouds coming from the west side three minutes past the start window opening
and a good part of the competition field takes off immediately. But thermals
are very turbulent and rather narrow and nobody succeeds in rising up more
than 500 meters above the taking off point.

A neighbourhood is in shadow
completely at half past one and most of pilots, who are in the air by now,
land back to the taking off zone.
"the Krkonose Mountains are really beautiful but thermals are too rough,"
complains English Louise Burnham with a smile on her face after the
landing. But she has never seen Ostrava city naturally and what is more, her
weight is certainly under 50kg even after good lunch. But clouds are pushed
completely to the east side and a new group of optimistic pilots is taking
off together with those ones who landed under the hill and came back to the
taking off point again. But conditions are much better than one hour ago and it will come out later this is the best time to fly away.
While 17 pilots land before the minimum distance five pilots reach the goal after almost two hours of a fighting. Frantisek Pavlousek is the fastest, one hour and 45 minutes were enough for him and thus he is the winner of today's task. Michal Sneiberg arrived six minutes later. The third Karel Vrbensky needed two hours to reach the goal and Petra Krausova with Jan Kupka arrived half an hour later.
Due to some pilots, who were forced to land on the mountain ridge and walked down to the civilization, organizers bring them back very late in the evening. Unfortunately, Renata Kuhnova represents the most difficult case. She had to go to hospital because of her harm leg. The knee didn't withstand today's landing on the 24th kilometer of the route and we'll miss one pilot at the briefing tomorrow.
