Czech Republic Championship 2004 - Slovenia

Standa Hlavinka

Sunday 8/8 2004
"Bukac won't come!" and some of his rivals are well pleased, as Jakub Eifler would move their positions one place lower for sure. This morning is after an afternoon storm and night heavy rain slightly cloudy and there is a white haze coming out of the nearby mountainsides. In contrast to Czech Republic Championship in the year 2002, camping is available right in the area of the stadium in Tolmin this year and there are about 73 tents. Some of the tents are flooded in the morning of course, including a big three bedroom one with a roomy hall (cost 1000 Czech crowns) into which his owner - Moravian youth Manci is with a smile on his face welcoming numerous crowds of astounded rubbernecks.

"He didn't talk about music and he hasn't said a word about jazz," is Radek Krapml alias Jazzman - whose knowledge of English is not very good - complaining just after the morning briefing, which was held by Honza Haberman in English. Although the sky is very cloudy and the development of the clouds is quite fast it is decided to get up to the launch of Kobala at 11 a.m. in order to consume short and fast task.

"I'll take my notebook and will look at the photos of Alena," is Marcel Konecny, newly in love, looking forward to spend his time, it is obvious he doesn't feel like going up the hill under these conditions. Janko Stehlik is missing his Petra and he is getting up even without his notebook. Well, love is a great soreceress ...

 Rainbow below the legs

Shortly before two o'clock p.m. is on the launch really announced 25.6 kilometers long task with 6 turning points and with a goal at the stadium of Tolmin, so the sections between them consist of roughly 4 and 5 kilometers long or rather short branches. The launching window is opened right after the end of the briefing and in twenty minutes time it's the area above the north hill quite rough. The ceilings are hanging scarcely hundred meters above the launch and beside it they start to darken alarmingly.

It starts to drizzle at 2.35 p.m. and hour later there can be heard first lightings from two different sides. At this time some of the racers lands in the goal - some of them unfortunately without the GPS system on- and the slower ones are meanwhile getting soaked during the flight. With the speed average at 34 km per hour and with half an hour long flight is the winner of today's task Tomas Brauner, Slovenian racer Dejan Adamovic is slower just about two minutes, and third is Wojtek Maliszewski from Poland. 31 out of 123 flying pilots land in the goal at today's task and seven of them miss the stadium only because of hundred of meters. Martin Orlik and Radek Vecera are among the unlucky ones.

By 4 p.m it is raining in Tolmin as well and the end of today is just as yesterday very rainy. Due to the weather forecast the similar weather should hold on for following days as well and poor Manci has even given up getting the water out…
